Can DUI Checkpoints Help Reduce Car Accidents during Memorial Day Weekend

    Are DUI checkpoints effective?

We cannot say so but as expected, the number of car accidents and fatalities has risen during the Memorial Day weekend as in other holiday weekends.

Although this year’s statistics showed that the number of drunk-driving arrests has dramatically declined compared to past years, more than 1,233 DUI arrests were reported throughout California throughout the weekend, the California Highway Patrol reports revealed.

In fact, in San Diego alone, the arrests rose by about 10 percent compared to last year or 75 DUI arrests.

Over the years, the number of people injured in drunk-driving incidents during holiday weekends has increased. Unfortunately, many of these violators were found to be teenage drivers who have been out drinking and were allowed to take wheels.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some of the common causes of teenage death in car accidents are the following:

    • Overspeeding
    • Drunk driving
    • Flagrant violation of traffic laws

What is welcome news is that there were no recorded fatalities nationwide during the holiday weekend, a far cry from the way some holiday weekends are remembered – with crashes and collisions.

This year’s commemoration will bring change to those weekends marred by DUI accidents and senseless loss of lives. Instead we celebrate this day with a new sense of value to the countless men and women who died in the service of our country.

To pursue your claims in DUI-related car accidents and other accident-related issues, you can consult with our experienced California personal injury attorneys. You may dial our toll free number at 1-866-772-2889, or email us at info@mesriani.com for free case analysis.

May In Review!

I liked doing the end of the month wrap up so much last month I thought I'd do it again this month (and maybe every month?) I wish I had started doing this sooner! Even looking back at last months was really interesting to me! I can't wait to look back at these in a year or so!

    May in review!
new blogs I found & enjoyed:
    • I just recently found that Geninne had a blog. I've been raving about how much I love her work since the early days of this blog, so I'm super stoked to find she has a blog!!
Creepy Animals. So, they haven't posted in five weeks but going through the all the old posts was a lot of fun!!

    iphone apps downloaded:
Park Finder. Helps you find local parks. You can search by activities and it shows you the distance to each park from where you are!
Garage Sale Rover. Last month I downloaded the igarage sale app, which I still love but this new one shows sales that it doesn't (and visa versa!) This one is free plus it automatically marks rummage, estate and community sales in another color than garage sales which is so much easier for me.
Fungi. It's a mushroom identification app which is obviously super relevant to my interests.
    (kevin using the fungi app)

    my favorite posts this month:
What I wore 5.20.11 - The day I tackled my fear of taking photos on the deck!
The Collector: Part 9 - My most personal collection.
    Tutorial. Sweater Clips!
    Sorry Kitties...
    Where I blog.
The Dainty Squid - caught peeking in my journal!

new (to me) movies I watched:
Easy A. This movie was seriously 100x funnier than the previews ever looked. (The dad is totally my favorite character, I love him!)
Leaves of Grass. Okay, so I had seen this before but I really wasn't watching just listening while I worked but I actually sat down and watched it this time and I was surprised how much I liked it. (How can you not like a movie where Edward Norton plays both the main characters?!)
The Crush. I'm a big fan of late eighties, early nineties dramatic thrillers so this is right up my alley. I mean, it wasn't amazing but it was good to watch while I worked.
Fear. Well, I just told you I liked cheesy dramatic thrillers and this definitely fits the bill. Anyways, I actually really liked this one (possibly just because of young Mark Wahlberg though....)

    exciting happenings on and offline:
    • The new Man Man cd, Life Fantastic, came out and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I highly recommend it!
    • Hey vegans, and non-vegans who like yummy food - you know that daiya came out with pepperjack cheese not too long ago right? OHMYGOSH. It is the best thing I have ever tasted. We've been making grilled cheese sandwiches with it but my mind is seriously swirling with ideas for what else I can put this cheese on.
    • I got to meet Elycia and we had one heck of an amazing time!  I can't wait to see her and Ivan again.
    • I'm still on cloud nine from launching my new line earlier this month. I'm so so so excited for what the future holds!
    • I got a really really awesome email mid-month that I will tell you all about tomorrow! Eeeeep! I'm busting at the seams to spill the beans!

    See ya tomorrow!
    xoxo

Gemma's Vintage Wardrobe...(Via Made By Girl)

I've always loved the idea of having a walk-in wardrobe.  Not a walk-in closet but an ENTIRE room where I could get dressed & store all my handbags, clothes, and so on!

Know what I mean?? Aren't those the coolest??

Well, fellow blogger and reader of Made By Girl, Gemma Thomas has one of these pretty ward robes and was kind enough to share it with all of us! Her closet space gives off a powerful vintage vibe, don't you think??

I'm not surprised because Gemma runs an online boutique full of vintage home wares & novelty gifts! She also blogs at Love Gemsy, where you can learn a bit more about her and the things she's working on!

For those of you STILL CRAVING more amazing closets, check out this one belonging to Jenny here.

There's something undeniable about the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 2003 album "Fever To Tell." It's one of my all-time favorites. (Fun fact: I bought the album in Hollister of all places! Yeah, I was into Hollister/A&F in high school... oh how things have changed!) I received this dress in the mail from the TopShop brand, LOVE! One of the dresses I chose was this gorgeous bright fuschia number with the high collar. It came with a skinny belt but I opted for a thicker black belt with a prominent gold buckle to match my Triple Triangle necklace from Little Pancakes. These shoes are oldies from Charlotte Russe that magically lived through the flood (they were at the tip top of my closet so the water never reached them!). I felt like I was about to meet some fab lady friends for happy hour drinks in this ensemble. Hence the "Date with the night" by YYY!

Yesterday we celebrated Memorial Day at my parents' house with swimming and grilling. My cough is getting progressively better so we're on the upswing, honeybees! We came back into town and cleaned the whole house before settling into bed. And today... today is a productive day! Lots to do, that's for sure! Be sure to play the song under the photos to set the mood for the day! Happy Tuesday!

    Charlotte Russe blazer
    Thrifted belt
    Target tights
    Charlotte Russe suede ruffle heels
Triple Triangle Necklace c/o Little Pancakes

PS; You might want to peruse the Love website a little bit! You may or may not have a fab chance to win a pretty frock from there later this week! (If you want my opinion, my favorites are totally: Anthea and the Gold Pleated dress. But wait! The dress I'm wearing above also comes in Peach (I die!!!) and Champagne! Peach being my favorite color and champagne being absolutely stunning! Now I'm regretting my self-imposed shopping ban for June! Help! haha)

iPhone Photos: A Memorial Day Cookout

Hello! This is Rhiannon from Liebemarlene Vintage, and I'm happy to be kicking off Lulu Letty's week of guest posts.  One thing I love about Maria's blog is all of the photos she takes of the things she does and has around her house, and since I especially love her iPhone photo posts I thought I'd do one of my own.

We had a pretty epic weekend full of trips and beach-swimming, so it was nice to end it all off with a quiet Memorial Day picnic at Sweetwater Creek State Park, just west of Atlanta.  The place is beautiful--there are old mill ruins and rivers and a lake, and even though every single park in the area was busy we managed to find a free picnic table and grill.  We went with our pals Zack and Lauren and ate veggie hot dogs and corn on the cob, kabobs and potatoes and had beer and cider.  We laughed at loud fishermen and made jokes, and the sun set and the mosquitos weren't too bad, and to top it all off we went out for gelato when we got back to Atlanta.

Back to Maria.  I'm excited she's off to the Twin Cities, mostly because I used to live in Minneapolis years ago and loved so many things about it.  Here are my favorite things about the Minneapolis/St. Paul area:

    1.  Thrift stores: This is where I first started thrift shopping on a regular basis, and I still do miss Midwestern thrift stores.

    2.  The lakes:  Minneapolis has a lovely little string of lakes surrounded by park, and I used to go running around Cedar Lake, and it was so much prettier than my current midtown Atlanta running trail.

    3.  First Avenue:  This might be my favorite music venue ever, dark and perfectly grungy.  And Prince Dance Night can't be beat.

    4.  F. Scott Fitzgerald:  Just knowing that he grew up in St. Paul gave the place a magical feeling whenever I went there.  Eventually I ended up like Zelda and couldn't take the cold.

    5.  Minneapolis Central Library:  The new building was kind of cheesy space-age, but I miss the brightness of it and all those books.

    6.  The Mary Tyler Moore Show.  I always loved the show growing up, but it wasn't until I moved to Minneapolis (and got a Netflix subscription) that I really got hooked.  I rented every single episode and loved every moment I walked by the downtown Minneapolis corner where Mary threw her beret.

    7.  Growin' Up.  One of my favorite bloggers Jessica Rolland has lived in North Carolina and England, and now she's in Minneapolis, writing about a lot of the places on this list.

    8.  Minnesota summers.  Minneapolis gets a bad wrap because of its cold winters, but no one really talks up its warm, but never-too-hot summers enough.  Moving to Atlanta has made me miss them more than ever.

    9.  The Mall of America.  I'm not even joking--the place is funny and oversized and so stereotypically American that it's not even funny, but it is kind of funny.

    10.  Minnesota nice.  It's true, people are just nicer there.  I've found that no amount of southern hospitality can beat Minnesota nice.  Though as a native Midwesterner I'm probably biased.

All of that has nothing to do with the photos, but I'm just excited to see Maria's posts from the Twin Cities, and I'm crossing my fingers there'll be outfit posts on my old stomping grounds as well as all the places I never adventured to but should have.

Pressed Flowers!

    I have a new favorite hobby...pressing flowers.
It all started when I found this pocket sized moleskine at Borders. It was on sale since Borders was closing down but I had no use for it since I already have a million other notebook that I write in for a week then forget about. (please tell me I'm not the only one who does this?!) The next day while walking through the woods I thought of the perfect use, to press flowers in! Since there was only one left at Borders I figured it would be gone by the time I went to buy it so I just ordered it off amazon.

    For some reason this is ridiculously fun and way more addicting then I ever imagined. I pick nearly one of everything to put in my little notebook. I love flipping through the pages of collected flowers, and leaves and seeing how they've changed. Here are some of my favorites;
And one that was just a test that I didn't think would turn out at all but for obvious reasons became my absolute favorite...
A little tiny mushroom! I didn't think it would end up acceptable at all, I figured it would just rot or something but it's so perfect. I plan on putting many many more mushrooms in my notebook!

    Does anyone else press flowers?
    xoxo

The Burning House

I was perusing the beautiful photos from That's Just it Photo and I came across a really cool project and website called The Burning House where they share what you would take with you if your house was burning. It is a fascinating collection that you'll have to pop over and see more of if you are interested. I adore projects like this and can't wait to follow it and see more...

What would you take with you? I've got to think about this for a bit.

    Picnic Ale
Cole and I had a lovely little picnic on Saturday afternoon! I've been dying for months to wear my Matilda saddle shoes, but the weather has been too awful to risk ruining them. It was so nice to be able to finally wear them out and about. They make me smile from ear to ear every time I look at them.
