snow dayyyy!

so yesterday i had a logo critique in Portfolio class. my logo is for a fictitious vintage apparel and record store i made back 1.5-2 years ago in illustrator class [when i originally did the 3 owl illustrations, one of which i made mention of being taken & used by someone else via flickr]. anyway, this was the little owl friend i did for the original logo. i wont bother posting the "original" one because its AWFUL! this one isn't complete yet. i'm going to abstract the apostrophe/leaf and tweak the serifs a bit more, but its a fairly good indication fo where its headed. i am pleased with it. [in the below example, his feathers on the left appear smaller.. AI was being dumb but they're actually the same size].

anyway, after the critique i went and ran a few errands and then headed up to mike's house in west nashville to keep him company and he did the tiresome job of painting... still. i got there and got really really sleepy so after we ran to Lowe's and ate at Blue Coast i settled onto the couch for a little 1.5 hour nap. i'm not sure why i was so beat. he painted and sang aloud while i slept with pillows over my face haha. a silly little pictuer of him that he didnt know i took:

we headed back to franklin around 6:30pm or so but made a few stops in west end. we got home and i saw all the tweets about schools closing today because of the anticipated snow storm. this is the "worst since 2003" so they say. luckily it didnt take TOO long for O'more to call off classes for friday [this is only the 2nd time it's happened in the past 8 years or so]. woohoo no art history 2! that meant i got to sleeeeeeeep in! the plan was to wake up early and head back up to nashville to get things and then go buy a couch! thats right. a beautiful red couch! [we've since decided we're going to probably purchase the couch AND loveseat! eep!]. so excited about this. silly, i know! but i love the thought of us making large purchases such as a living room set together. :D end the gushing. this is what we've agreed on:

anyway, we slept and then we were woken by mike's dad calling at like 10:30 to tell us not to leave the house. to stay put and all that jazz because in just 2 minutes, it came a crazyyy snow storm in columbia or wherever. so after that i called my mom who is 45 minutes west of there and she said they already had an inch or so and that it was coming down with a vengeance. i desperately needed to pay the water bill today [as its due tomorrow, and they're closed] so we decided to brave it to drive less than half a mile down the street to pay it. then we realized we needed groceries. it was coming down hard but we trekked to kroger. it was PACKED! we were in there for far too long becasue we came out and everything in sight was solid white. it was exactly one mile back to the house basically and we slid SO many times. i was literally freaking out. i was on the phone with my mom while he drove and i recorded the entire thing on our flip cam [videos soon!] we almost slid into an oncoming van, a stop sign, a ditch, etc. we FINALLY made it home and decided this is where we'll stay until it passes. [which apparently wont be any time soon].

Angie [the other bartender at work] called me at 11:30 this morning and said "im just calling to tell you what you probably already know... dont you even dare think about trying to come to work tonight". my bar is a 35 minute drive south and there was no way i could make it. plus my tiny little convertible is rear-wheel drive. aint happening! so i probably wont work tomorrow night either. a;djksf;alfs jd :( sad day. i could use the casholllaaaaaa.

while in the car at kroger i realized i was wearing my pants inside out... yep... i had gone into city hall to pay our water bill....WITH MY PANTS ON INSIDE OUT! and yes... it was noticable. afsd;jasdf;ljasd. hahahahaha leave it to me. whatever.

we got home and cooked spicy black bean burgers and we took georgia outside. SHE LOVES THE SNOW. loves loves loves. it was a lazy day of kathy griffin stand-up comedy, the beginnings of clueless, pizza, snow, snow, snow, silly videos, hot showers and hot jacuzzi baths, sitting for a pow wow with bryan in Aj's floor, and all that jazz. its been fun but it feels so surreal. i can't wait to wake up and see how much snow we have tomorrow! we took a ton of Fuji instax polaroids. they come out blurry in the photos below because my iphone is crappy but whatever, i'll scan all of them in soon becasue they're super cute!

i hope we're able to get out and about tomorrow. i'd like to be able to work, but at the very least i'd like for us to be able to go buy our daggum furniture!

hows everyone else's weekend going?! any fun snow for you guys?! if you're around franklin, come downtown and play in it with us! we have a big yard and more than enough snow to go around! snowball warzzzzzzzz!

    xo

ps; here are the three new blog buttons! please take one and post it around, if you dont mind! if you have a button you'd like me to add to my sidebar, just leave a comment below or email me! xoxox

3: Yay! Liberty of London is coming to Target. (thanks for the reminder Steph)

4: Like Dear Ada I am yearning for Spring and these flower photos by Bill Beckley are stunning.

5: Have you been noticing pops of hot pink in fashion -- so fun. Loving the Vanessa Bruno collection first spotted here.

6: I meant to share this a few weeks ago, but in case you have missed it, they are showcasing a new version of Emma on Masterpiece Theater - you can watch a segment of it online here. I love Masterpiece Theater!

7: Picked up Food Rules at the Library, can't wait to thumb through it.

8: If I get more serious about sewing and purchase a sewing machine, I would want my workspace to stay clean and tidy like this space Ellie posted at Mint -- I love the industrial look.

9: I can't stop thinking about these beautiful Mociun rings Lena Corwin posted. Gorgeous!

10:Have you listened to the Hope for Haiti Now Album? Justin + Charlie do a pretty great job with Hallelujah.

Toyota Recalls millions of vehicles

AP-Toyota Motor Co. indicated that it will recall 1.09 million more vehicles in the United States on Wednesday, because of mechanical problems that could cause accelerator pedals to become stuck.

Toyota, which issued a recall last week for 2.3 million vehicles, expanded the notice to include the 2008-2009 Highlander, the 2009-2010 Venza and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.

Sources say that "This isn't the first time an automaker has initiated a sales stoppage. In the past four years, Chrysler, Nissan, Ford and Subaru all have initiated stoppages, but Toyota's affects the most models."

Victims of vehicle malfunctions have suffered millions of dollars in losses and injuries that could have been prevented. The automakers have been dealing with this problems for decades, and now the government is putting down pressure on them.

They dichotomy to the industry has been (whether to install the part needed or face possible litigation in the future) these is call the cost analysis. Big companies face it every day, but not to such extend of potential damages.

When victims are injured by the negligence of the auto makers, often they do not recover for their loss. It is time to make the industry more responsible for their actions or rather inaction. Rather than waiting for the government to intervene, auto makers should be more responsible with the production of their vehicles.

Let us know if you, or a loved one has suffered injuries as a result of vehicle malfunctioning. You may be entitled to recover for your injuries.

new look around here!

hey y'all! exciting fun times to be had! i'm still a wee bit under the weather, and i skipped out on Print 2 today to be alerted of my awesome "~Sinus Infection"... ladeedahh! but luckily i'm already feeling a bit better so hopefully i'll continue to be on the upswing of things!

i didnt take a lot of time to blog today because between the almost-fever, the feeling like i'm going to die, and the headaches, i've just wanted to rest. but i managed to work on my Print 2 book for 6 hours and take a hot hot bath [Georgia jumped in, too].

i took a little time to work on new blog buttons [3 new designs on the right side!] and a new blog header! please take a minute to change out the blog button if you'd like. i realize they're a little more visually interesting than the horrible hack job i did in flash for the GIF one. i promise to have a new and improve GIF animated banner up shortly!

so yes! please choose one of your liking and let me know how you feel about the new blog banner! i'm going to be doing a whole new CSS layout over the next few weeks and finally phase out what i've got now. i need 2 side panels so it's time to get a crackin!

hope your'e having a great week! we went & stocked up on food as per my mother's request since we're supposed to get "snow and ice" this weekend. bleh, hope i can still make it to work!

Millions More Recalled by Toyota for Defective Gas Pedal

Most motor vehicle accidents are caused by driver errors but there are also incidents wherein auto defects are to blame for fatal car crashes.

Following the deaths of a CHP officer and his family, car-maker giant Toyota has launched the recall of millions of affected models said to have “unsecured floor mats” which cause unintended accelerations.

Some 4.2 million vehicles recalled later, Toyota has recently announced another massive recall in order to fix accelerator pedals with mechanical problems. The gas pedal mechanism can potentially get worn down and this may cause the accelerator to get harder to press, slower to return or even stuck.

Since Toyota’s first recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 100 reported accidents, wherein 17 crashes and 5 fatalities are suspected to have been caused by defective floor mats and accelerator pedals in Toyota vehicles.

The latest recall made by Toyota involves the following car models:

    • 2005-2010 Avalon
    • 2007-2010 Camry
    • 2007-2010 Tundra
    • 2008-2010 Sequoia
    • 2009-2010 RAV4
    • 2009-2010 Corolla
    • 2009-2010 Matrix
    • 2010 Highlander

At present, the Japanese company with a previously sterling reputation, is working on a solution to the accelerator pedal problem. However, the problematic gas pedal system came from a single supplier. Toyota is quick to shoulder responsibility when Toyota spokesman John Hanson said, “"Responsibility for this in the end is ours."

Indeed, motor vehicle defect liability falls squarely on the shoulders of car manufacturers. There is a warrant of safety and quality that once a car is sold on the market, consumers can expect to be safe with the purchase.

In the event that a car crash accident occurs because of auto defects, car owners have every right to hold car manufacturers or auto parts suppliers liable in a product liability lawsuit.

Seasonal decor

I agree with Page who shared this lovely winter wreath and how to make it over at Purl Bee, along with this statement.

"I am a big fan of winter decorations that are festive, but that don't hit you over the head with a specific holiday or theme. Decorations that cheer you up and add charm to a room, but don't feel like they need to be removed the moment the occasion has passed."

How many of you have more seasonal decor (fall, winter, spring, summer) rather then holiday specific? In general, I don't have a lot of decor, but I am wanting to embrace this seasonal methodology, it makes so much sense.

Homes evacuated in San Antonio

AP News- Thank God that no one was injured, or so the reports say, but what a nightmare. Construction crews, presumably from Centex Homes moved dirt to shore up a group of houses precariously perched on a crumbling hill in San Antonio on Monday as engineers tried to determine why the land below was shifting, causing dozens of homes to evacuate.

The City of San Antonio is saying that a wall that was supposed to retain the dirt in place to prevent what happened, was built without a permit. Gaping crevices, some 15 feet deep, cut across several yards as dirt cascaded into a towering stone retaining wall that nearly split in half.

Home buyers are wondering now whether the premiums payed for the supposed "view" were worth the trouble that now they face. Some lot owners payed $10,000 additionally for the upgrade that now it does not seem like an upgrade at all.

The Baez Law Firm will be representing home owners against the building companies in an effort to bring the buyers closure during this nightmare. If your house has been one affected, give us a call. Our San Antonio Law Firm can help you with your legal needs.

The Importance of Integrated Marketing in the Internet Age

With the coming of age of on-line marketing, the range of potential ways in which to reach target prospects is almost limitless. There is SEO, pay-per-click, webinars, electronic newsletters, mass e-mails, banner ads, blogs, and all kinds of avenues for social marketing. Yet even with all these relatively new options, implementing “integrated” marketing efforts remains as critical as ever – perhaps even more so today than yesterday. That is because, the whole concept of integrated marketing rests on a few basic premises, including:

    1. The most successful marketing campaigns are those in which different marketing tools work to support another.
For example, obtaining high placement on search engines has become an area of prime focus over the past several years. And what’s one of the main ways to enhance such efforts? Getting links pointing to the firm’s site. And what’s one important way of making that happen? Generating “news” in the form of articles, releases, opinions, etc. and disseminating it to both on-line and off-line outlets. Sound familiar? Enhance your site’s rankings by raising your perceived credibility. Same old dog, just new ways of making it do tricks

    2. A multiplicity of message exposures is still critical.
Yes, someone may get to your site via Google or otherwise. Yes, they may call you based on interfacing with your firm’s web site alone. But let’s face it, the most powerful marketing programs are those which allow one “touchpoint” to reinforce another. For example, a prospect may see/read about your firm, but when that curiosity/interest is validated through another exposure (e.g., an individual, a published article, a seminar, etc.) the likelihood of creating a comfort level between firm/attorney and that prospect can only be enhanced. This is important when one looks at not just lead generation, but conversion data as well.

    3. Measurement of marketing efforts must be holistic.
Is it important to track/analyze metrics such as “hits,” “visitors,” “click-throughs,” the number of PR placements, responses to advertisements, etc? Yes. But because so many of these variables are, in fact, dependent on one another, it’s also important to look at the firm’s marketing efforts in their totality. Without one element, it’s quite possible the success of other elements would have been diminished.

The critical thing to understand is that while the tools to be used may change over time, the basic concepts of marketing remain the same. That is why determining objectives and developing appropriate “strategies” must still be done prior to writing an ad, designing a web site, pitching an article, spending time on a social media program or implementing an optimization effort. Only in this way can one be sure that each element of the marketing program is given the maximum opportunity to help make the whole program succeed.

Property Damages in Ventura Maybe caused by Tornado

Witnesses believe that a wind funnel that caused massive property damages all over Ventura County is a tornado though it is not yet confirmed by the National Weather Service.

Lifting a car atop a tree and boats have been knocked off from trailers are just some of the incidents caused by recent fierce winds in the area which a meteorologist called a “microbust” which is a form of wind gust.

Though no one was reportedly injured in the incident, owners must secure their property so that they would not be burdened with the expenses for the repairs and replacements of the damaged property.

Police Chief Resigns Amidst Charges of Discrimination and Retaliation

Following the $30 million legal battle over the alleged discrimination and retaliation committed by the Montebello police chief against his officers, Police Chief Dan Weast resigned recently.

Last October, several police officers filed a complaint against Chief Weast, which claimed that he discriminated against qualified minority candidates and only promoted his friends as well as other officers who belonged to an “all-white” group called Mahan’s Marauders.

Morale has dropped low within the department and there was even a 90% vote of no confidence in the police chief issued by the Montebello Police Officers Association.

The suit filed by the officers against Weast is seeking $30 million in damages although the amount has been reduced to less than a quarter of it following talks over the settlement.

Following the same laws that prohibit employment discrimination based on gender, race, color, religion and disability, employers are likewise prohibited from retaliating against employees who have validly complained discriminatory practices or labor violations.

An employer may not fire, demote, harass or otherwise "retaliate" against an individual for:

    • Filing a charge of discrimination
    • Participating in a discrimination proceeding
    • Opposing discrimination or unlawful practices
    • Requesting accommodations related to employment discrimination
    • Refusing to obey an order reasonably believed to be discriminatory
    • Threatening to file a charge of discrimination

There is retaliation against the employee who complained when he or she is subjected to adverse actions such as denial of promotion, termination, harassment, or even filing groundless cases against the employee to intimidate or coerce the employee into foregoing the action against the employer.

While $30 Million worth of damages may seem exorbitant, employers found guilty of discrimination and retaliation against their employees will be held liable for compensation which may include back pay, front pay, policy changes, actual damages, damages for emotional distress and punitive damages.

Beef Possibly Contaminated by E. Coli Recalled

Food manufacturing companies are expected to produce quality foods that are safe eating to eat. Product recalls may be initiated if it was proven that the company has failed to fulfill such duty.

About 864,000 pounds of ground beef, possibly affected by E. coli, were recently recalled by a southern California meat-packing firm.

According to the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Services, there were no reported illnesses from the pound beef sold by Montebello based Huntington Meat Packing Inc., under the Huntington, El Rancho, and Imperial Meat Co. brands.

The contaminated beef was already sold to restaurants, hotels, and distribution centers in California between Jan. 5 and Jan. 15, 2010 and Feb. 19 and May 15, 2008.

Reports said that department personnel noticed the problem while a food safety assessment is being conducted.

If the department did not discover the problem and the infected beef was made available for public consumption, people may suddenly suffer from dehydration, bloody diarrhea, or even kidney failure due to the deadly germ that the food might be contaminated with.

All food manufacturers should carefully do their job because they may be held liable if someone acquired an illness after eating a contaminated food produced by them. In addition, being extremely careful while manufacturing a certain kind of product, not limited to foods, will save the company from different legal problems that may be brought by product recalls.

much overdue [warning: image HEAVY!]

    so much to update about....

this is what i wore to work Saturday night. such an old shirt but i decided it needed a little light from the dark abyss that is my closet. whatever.

Sunday we woke up and prepared to face the day. Mike had to take care of some business up in Nashville and pick up his son, Toby. I packed up my computer and stuff and headed to Panera on Columbia Avenue and waited on Merissa to meet me for some homework fun. Instead of doing homework we looked at the Cozumel website for the trip we are definitely taking in October! eep! HELLLLOO MEXICO AND SUNSHINE! get in my life! it was a such a nice little break from reality [read: the drab, gloomy weather that is the current Tennessee winter]. If all goes as planned, it'll Merissa, her hubby JT, Mike, myself, and mayyyybee Kayce and either her hubby or Caitlin! haha i would love it if a group of 6 of us could go! [FYI: 7 day all-inclusive resort in Cozumel, $2600 for 2 people! that includes airfare!] Graduation present, much? yes please! Anyway, Mike eventually got back to Franklin with Toby in tow and brought him to Panera for me to meet him. Yes, Mike has a son. A precious 13 month old baby boy named Toby. He's darling. This was the first time I had the chance to meet him and I fell in love. No, I haven't talked about it publicly simply because it's not my place to do so. And no, I will not be posting any photos or videos of Toby so please respect the privacy of everyone involved. I'll simply say that Mike loves Toby more than anything on the planet and I guess I could never really fathom to what degree until I actually saw it. Sunday was a very fun day for us. Mike left to take him home after a while and I dont even really remember what ended up going on Sunday night. I think we attempted to watch Year One but he fell asleep and I wasn't feeling it so we just turned it off and slept.

    Sunday's Outfit Details:
    Dress: Forever 21 $30
    Lace Shirt: Therapy $50-ish? IDK!
    Cardigan: Charlotte Russe $25
Skinny Pyramid Belt: Forever 21 $12
    Tights: Target $7
Shoes: WalMart $9 [G chewed them to shreds... fu!]
Bow in Hair: Handmade by me [Buy @ My Etsy!]

Praise i didnt have class yesterday! We slept in but eventually got up to run errands... only to find that everything we needed to do was closed. Lame. We went for lunch at Genghis Grill and then I sweet talked him into driving me to Opry Mills for some shopppping! I knew I shouldnt... but I did anyway.

    Monday's Outfit Details:
    Dress: American Rag $45
    Cardigan: Charlotte Russe $25
    Tights: Target $7
    Boots: Goodwill $10
    Brooch: Forever 21 $5
Bow in Hair: Handmade by me.

A few things I tried on.... [not all are pictured.. obvz]
I wasn't sure how i felt about this dress. I loved the color and I loved the print, but the material tends to hang a bit funny and cling in all the wrong places. I got it in a small but it was a fun dress. Mike loved it and said it made my hair look bright red. I guess that means I was sold. ha

I wanted to love this dress. I really did. And I liked it alright.. but I already own practically the same dress with long sleeves. I couldn't make myself buy it, but I love the Parisian red/black/white combo. It's sophisticated but still casual. Makes me want to go on a stroll in France or something. Maybe a gondola ride in Venice? yeah... I didn't buy it haha

I love love loved this fun warm toggle sweater jacket thing. But the toggles were leather and the sweater itself was 54% wool so I put it back. Not a bad get up for $40 though!

I'm thinking maybe I had lace/cream goggles on when I bought this yesterday. It doesnt look all that great here but man oh man I had great things in store for this little dress! You know me... i LOVE lace, antique cream colors, bows, blah blah blah! I dont regret this purchase... yet... We'll just have to see what I can come up with for it.

I LOVEEEEEEEEE Minnie Mouse! So much! I'm such a fan of it but Mike didn't really understand my enthusiasm to spend $25 on a red Minnie sweatshirt. [But I'm glad I did because its fleece-lined and I wore it last night on our midnight run for dinner haha! huzzah!]

Then we rushed home so I could get ready and drive up to Grassland to meet Merissa for Caitlin's 21st dessert celebration at The Cheesecake Factory in Green Hills. This is what I wore...

    Monday Night's Outfit Details:
    Dress: Forever 21 $35-40-ish?
    Cardigan: Charlotte Russe $25
    Tights: Target $7
    Shoes: Charlotte Russe $35
Brooch (at waist): From a previous Target dress
    Headband: Forever 21 $7

    oh hai boyfriend!

I had a lot of fun last night. It was nice to get together with all of the girls for drinks and dessert. There were 12 of us total, and we had to wait a pretty little minute for a table to accomodate us all. We finally were seated at 8pm and we ordered but we didn't get served until well after 9pm. Either way, it was good conversation, good people, and an all around good time. Since I dont drink alcohol, I sipped on some yummy Sweet Tea [even though I ordered a Strawberry Lemonade] but I guess a table of that many girls is a bit much for one person so I tried to not be too harsh. But it was fun with Merissa, Caitlin, Kayla, Jordan, LK, Jennifer, Katie, Amanda, Megan, Tiffany, Kayce and myself. woo! good times! photos soon i hope!

I came home and got there at about 10:30pm and Mike still hadn't eaten so we grabbed dinner and settled into bed around 1:15am. I had to be up at 9 for class at 11 and all that jazz. today has just been a blah day. I had Portfolio from 11 to 12:40 and then Merissa and I hopped in the Yeep [her new gorgeous bright red Jeep Wrangler] and went to Sweet CeCe's for our weekly fro-yo. The mango tango sorbet is yummm! She dropped me off at campus to head to her drawing class and I came to Panera and I've been here ever since. Fun! [but no, no homework accomplished yet]

    Today's Outfit Details:
Dress: Victoria's Secret Nightgown $14 clearance
    Belt: Forever 21? IDK
    Tights: Target $7
    Boots: Goodwill $10

I'm trying really really reallyyyyy hard to recycle outfits in my closet. It's pretty safe to say I have absolutely no shortage of clothes ever, but I'm bad about wearing something once [or never] and just buying something new. I'm trying to wear more of what I have. I've been tearing tags off like a mad woman! go me!

I'm going to work on some stuff and meet Mike in a bit for errands and hopefully we'll have a nice quiet dinner at home and let all this stress thats slowly consuming us just dissipate. bleh! Wish us luck! xo
