Shark Week 2011

If you've been reading my blog for a while then you may already be well aware of my fascination with all things shark related. Everything. I live, breathe, and sleep sharks. My life goal is to free dive with a Great White (after many many many cage diving experiences, of course!). Some people get excited for Harry Potter (or did, I should say), Twilight or maybe even the newest Judd Apatow film... but me... I get excited for Shark Week. I have all of the DVDs, books, and even a collection of plush sharks to commemorate the annual event. Last year we rushed to move into our new place and had cable installed the day of Shark Week's premier so we wouldn't miss it.

Last year's Shark Week set up!

My love for sharks doesn't stop at the jaw-dropping entertainment on Discovery. Instead of just watching the shows or learning about them, we should also make a conscious effort to help keep them alive. With overfishing, finning, and sport, Great Whites are now more endangered than tigers! That's kind of huge. The population of white sharks have dropped 90% in the last 2 decades. Since I've been alive! To think that I may not have the chance to educate my children on the incredible creature that lives in our oceans is a horrifying thought. Sharks have been around for 400 million years! And we're managing to wipe them out without a second thought. With the booming popularity of Shark Week, other shows have made a break in mainstream media such as Expedition Great White. These shows help educate the general public that white sharks don't eat people for fun. They're actually very very intelligent creatures. We all need to do our part to help.

Whether it's donating money to a conservation organization, adopting a shark of your own, or signing a petition to help stop shark finning, we can do so much with so little. (Sharks aren't the only sea creatures that need our help. Please check out the above links and do what you can to help save our waters!)

Tonight we're throwing a Shark Week party. Shark and ocean themed food and drink. Balloons, decorations, and some Andy Samberg. Hopefully our guests will finally be able to see just how passionate I am about these mysterious but magical creatures! (And I have a petition here for all of the guests to sign, too!)

I urge you all to check out Shark Week, check out various resources around the web, and to get involved! (and swing by our party if you're in Nashville!) Happy Shark Week!

PS; Here's my shark infographic from my final semester of college! I can't seem to find the version where all of the typos are fixed so you'll have to make due with this one! (Click to view it larger!)

52 weeks of instax // week 28, 29 & 30

Week 28 // Doctor Octopus lounging on the couch. This is probably the most common place and position you'll find him sleeping. He knows he's precious.
Week 29 // Jumping with Elycia at the beach.
Week 30 // I had a really awesome mail day on Tuesday and got three pairs of shoes. Two pretty floral ones from Forever 21 and some fancy new ones from Blowfish.
It feels great to be completely caught up on this project! I'm excited to share my weekly photo with you each Sunday!!
Hope you're having a great day! I'm on day two of my birthday weekend extravaganza (aka antiquing/thrifting/good food). Make sure to stop back tomorrow. There's a little bit of a blog party going on all this week (August 1st - 5th) but I'll tell you some more about that in the morning.
    xoxo

52 Weeks of Instax!

It's been a while since I've blogged about the project I started back in January, 52 weeks of instax: one instax photo for each week of the year 2011. But that doesn't mean I haven't been keeping up. A few weeks ago I finally got around to photographing weeks 1-27.

I even made a little gif to show them all off...
From now on Sunday is my designated day to blog about the 52 weeks of instax project! Each week I'll share my photo from the week, maybe a little story about it, maybe even share some of my favorite photos from other people participating, just things related to the project.

Remember it's never too late to join in! You can find an instax camera here, and more posts about 52 weeks here. Also, be sure to post your photos to the 52 weeks flickr group!!

I'll be back later with weeks 28, 29 and 30's photos!
    xoxo

Sunday Reading: Drawing Inspiration from H&H

I'm loving the "Weekend Decorating" article of the latest House and Home magazine (Sept '11) produced by Stacey Smithers, (text Kimberley Brown) and photographed by Angus Fergusson.  Titled "Drawing Inspiration" Stacey created some super obtainable DIY's  to help create a more relaxed look with painterly brushstrokes, handwritten embellishments and more.  I wanted to show everything - I loved it all so much, but of course shouldn't.  So I picked my two most favourite, above the bedroom with it's paint imperfect walls - notice the uneven brushstrokes left by a paint roller , colour-block shutter doors, the bookcase used as a headboard (isn't that brilliant), instead of sconces a hanging pendant from a hook, and keep looking, I'm sure you'll find more.  And below a quirky handwritten label painted onto a used wine bottle to serve water with.  If you're hooked up with Zinio you can purchase the digital version here. This article alone is worth it!

Wall colour, Setting Plaster 231 and shutter doors - from top - Plummet (272), Slipper Satin (2004), Down Pipe (26), Farrow & Ball

This month's extra large sponsor is right up my alley. Lunch Pail Pictures is an adorable couple who specialize in wedding videography! Mike and I are totally into the video trend of weddings the past few years and we hope to have a videographer at our own special day. Geoff and Candice are going to share with you a new little video they put together.

Cannonball!

Outdoor swings immediately conjur up memories of long summer days filled with cannonballs off the docks in the lake, picnics, and swinging one's toes up to touch the sky under the shade tree.  These one-of-a-kind hand crafted wooden swings are made by Sky Saddle out of Flagstaff, Arizona who create them from found downed trees they find in their area.  I wish I was on one now. Friday Night!

What I wore: shirt : c/o Omerica Organic, skirt: TJ Maxx
What I did : found neat mushrooms at the state park!
Who I did it with : this jumping weirdo!
Just a brief recap of my Friday night! Simple evenings like this are the best! This is the first time we've gone mushroom hunting in a while, it's been so rush rush lately, it was so nice to just go the park then come home to just hangout and watch a movie (even if it really was lame! two thumbs down for Stone)

I've got a reeeeeally busy day today and I've got to head out already! I'll make up for the super short post starting Monday! ;)
    xoxo!!

Ecelectible Parts 4 U....Asian Influence

Sorry for being MIA yesterday....had some personal issues to deal with & all is resolved now thank God!

Now that I'm back.... I wanted to blog about a shop I found called Eclectible Parts 4 U. This shop caught my eye because of all the vintage & Asian influence items they have available. I love all kinds of vases & home accessories, so this shop is ideal for ANYONE looking for rare & unique pieces to bring into your home! There's something really cool about owning something from the 1950's or 60's don't you think?

I don't have a ton of vintage in my place unfortunately, but I'm looking to add some once we build the dining area console - a project that is loooong overdue!

Anyhow.... I also noticed how the shop owner came up with the name Eclectible. Using two words.... Eclectible & Collectible which mean:

"ECLECTIC" : Selecting or choosing items from a variety of sources and styles generally from multiple sources.

"COLLECTIBLE" : An object that is valued in certain circumstances or sought after and popular to collectors due to its uniqueness and rarity.

Vintage Asian home accessories are always a BIG hit in my book, they make for great conversation pieces as well!

Do you have any vintage items in your home?? If so, what ??

Ahoy! Attack of the Icebergs

Crikey! Did you see this? From what I understand, a mondo iceberg four times the size of Manhattan broke into pieces off the coast of Greenland last year, and now nearly a year later they are seeing it appear off the 'iceberg alley' shores of Newfoundland!

The top photo is a slice of ice that hit Newfoundland's Goose Cove temporarily blocking the harbor until it broke and melted a bit.

That largest iceberg piece? They call it 'Petermann's Ice Island' which NASA has been watching and it has yet to hit the shores. Pretty surreal, huh?! I am continually fascinated by the mighty nature and beauty of icebergs! (See previous post) You can see a video clip for the magnitude of Petermann's Ice Island here.

Loft Tour: KB's Wardrobe

Two weeks ago I shared a little tour of my workspace! It's definitely where I spend most of my time at home. However, there is a space in our little home that I love most of all. My wardrobe. When we moved into our loft we were sort of bummed about the lack of storage space (read: no closet). The gal who lived here before us had fashioned a few rickity shelves in the laundry room (which we use as a pantry/craft storage), but they weren't really useful. We have a huge white brick wall running the length of our loft and not enough furniture to put there so there was a huge area that just looked oddly open. That's when my step-dad suggested we hang chain from the rafters and make a swaying wardrobe. Genius! Mike and I high-tailed it straight to Lowe's to purchase industrial strength chain and 1" pipe. It was a labor of love but I couldn't be happier! Not only do I get a fully functional (and huge!) "closet", but it also serves as a decorative feature with all of the colors and patterns. The chains and pipe fit the industrial feel of our home, but the clothing fits my personality. The perfect combination! (Also, I'm totally one of those girls that If I can't see it, I won't wear it. So this works out so nicely!)

The white storage cubes are from Walmart. The tall ones are 2 of the 3-cubby stacking shelves (8 total), and the shoe racks at the bottom are just that. (The horizontal shelves tend to buckle in the middle though! As you can see, I'm sure!). I love being able to display my little collection of clothing in our home because it's definitely a collection I've worked at accumulating over the years. Since I only own dresses and cardigans/jackets, they fit really well. My belts are in the bathroom and my tights are in a drawer. Win/win! I think the swaying wardrobe was such a genius idea and it's almost my dream closet! It's a piece of this loft that I will want to take with me to absolutely every new home we have (but it'll probably be impossible.) I'm just going to enjoy it for as long as possible!

You'll be able to see more photos on Moorea's blog next week! Thanks for stopping by my space!

How do you store/organize your clothing? Are you a "all items turned one way, in a certain order" kinda gal? I am!

A 28 day old golden golden tiger cub being fed bottle milk by a chimpanzee. OHMYGOSH. My heart is going to burst. I don't think I love anything more than seeing different species of animals become friends. I would probably cry big time if I saw this in person. (PLUS that chimpanzee is wearing jean shorts! What a cool dude!)
     (via: nytimes)
    Absolutely adore this outfit!
     (via: the 10 cent designer)

     (via: skittty)

This dress is so pretty! It's mostly the collar though, I'm crazy about collars!
I also love this dress. I don't own many solid colored dresses so this would be perfect in the fall with a pair of fun tights!
I know I mentioned it last week, but Happy Socks is still having a massive sale, and now it's up to 80% off!! I'm currently thinking about placing another order! (hey, it's almost my birthday, I'm allowed to spoil myself...right?)
This sauce pan is so snazzy!! Why don't they make stuff like that anymore?!

Well, I've gotta run. I have oodles of emails to tackle before the weekend.
    xoxo
ps. I still have a few ad spaces left for August, both small and large, if you'd like to grab one shoot me an email! Here's more info on ads if you need it! :)
