KATE ON A BEACH

Kate Moss photographed by Corinne Day in The Daisy Age, The Face 1990
I saw these photos in an exhibition in March 2006 at the Gimpel Fils Gallery, Davies Street. It was a Corinne Day exhibition called 15, focusing on her iconic photographs of Kate. It was simple, youthful and touching. corinneday.co.uk/exhibitions 'Gimpel Fils is pleased to announce an exhibition of Corinne Day’s iconic photographs of Kate Moss. Published in the Face in 1990, these images changed the course of fashion photography. Day’s pioneering contribution to photography was to forego the staged glamour of the fashion world, preferring to make images that remained true to the young, uninhibited teenage girl they depicted.' It ran from 27th February to 1st April 2006.

Fisher Price Recalls 3 in 1 High Chair

Fisher Price had yet again joined the bandwagon of companies that ordered recalls of their own products from the market. The recall was prompted by a report of a child who sustained a skull injury in an accident using the company’s high chair product.

The Fisher Price 3 in 1 high chair had been recalled due to its faulty features. The seat descends or leans backwards from its high chair frame when the booster seat button is released while the child is still seated. Moreover, the seat back can separate if not fully snapped in place. These features pose great fall hazard to young children.

The company voluntarily ordered the recall of all Mexico-manufactured high chairs which were sold exclusively at Target for $100.

Authorities advised consumers especially those who already purchased one to stop using the product immediately.

Products intended for children must be checked and scrutinized before they are sold. As young children are oblivious to dangers, they are the ones most likely to get hurt. Otherwise, manufacturers, distributors, and sellers can be held liable for injuries and harm caused by defective products under product liability.

In addition, parents must also ensure that all products being used, eaten or consumed by their children are manufactured by companies which have high regard for safety.

Measures to Battle Unemployment

California is one of the states badly hit by the economic slowdown. In fact, the unemployment rate currently stands at 10.5% which is 2% higher than the national jobless rate.

Seeing the need to address this issue, the state senate voted to approve two bills that would provide additional funds to unemployment insurance benefits.

Currently, most California workers receive employment insurance benefits for the duration of 59 weeks. If the proposed bill is approved, AB 23 X3 would give additional 20 weeks of unemployed insurance benefits.

The funds to be used for this benefit would not cause additional burden to the state, as it will come from the federal stimulus package. The Assembly already approved the bill and now awaits Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature.

The second bill, AB 29 X3 was aimed at establishing the “alternative base period” to decide if an unemployed individual who has earned sufficient wages can be eligible for such benefits. If passed, a worker’s recent earnings would be used as basis for one’s determining eligibility, which is more advantageous to seasonal workers.

With the increasing rate of unemployment cases, the primordial consideration is to find ways on how to help unemployed Californians in their daily existence like feeding their family and paying for their bills. The two bills, if enacted, hope to address these needs.

To know that both the Legislature and the Schwarzenegger’s administration are moving and working as a team to deal with this employment dilemma is a relief. It creates the impression that Californians, especially the unemployed, are taken care of by the government.

Four Possible Futures for Law Firm Scenario Planning Workshop

LMA'ers will be tweeting at #LMA during sessions of the upcoming 23rd LMA annual meeting at Gaylord Conference Center on the Potomac. Therefore, LMA has asked speakers to share some of their materials with those who will be following these tweets. Good idea! And so ...

On Wednesday morning, April 1, Bill Fiora (of Nixon Peabody), Ken Sawka (of Outward Insights), and I (Ann Lee Gibson Consulting) will lead a three-hour scenario planning workshop for senior legal marketers.

Below is a summary of four possible futures we have developed for participants' use during the session. Working in small groups, they will identify core and contingent strategies for success under different scenarios, identify early warnings to recognize when scenarios are "coming true," and challenge their own and others' assumptions and strategies.

Each of the following scenarios describes a possible future for the legal industry intersecting somewhere between two dimensions: (1) timing of economic recovery (early 2010 vs. 2011-12) and (2) legal services delivery models (aggregated vs. disaggregated). The scenarios are summarized below.

Note to workshop participants: You will receive and work with scenarios that are much more detailed than the following summaries.

Scenario #1 -- The Great Pretenders describes a world where economic recovery begins in early 2010, the earliest anyone now hopes for. Global M&A activity, one of the earliest indicators of the recovery, surges as market-leading companies and those with large cash reserves acquire competitors and suppliers weakened by the recession. The strong are eating the weak and getting even stronger.

In this world, law firm leaders feel they have made it through the tough times and look forward to life as they once knew it. The recession was tough, but it encouraged necessary discipline and weeded out the weak. 2010 promises to produce the most law firm mergers and acquisitions ever recorded.

Scenario #2 -- Shattered! describes a legal industry dramatically altered by a perfect storm of events that created a PR nightmare for BigLaw. In this possible future, the recession’s impacts on the legal industry pale in comparison to other events that also grabbed the public’s attention. Inside BigLaw, the survivors of the 2008-09 layoffs still suffer from depression and guilt. In 2009, a runaway bestseller and a summer HBO TV series set the stage for a Wall Street BigLaw disaster fueled by debauchery and hubris. One of America’s most respected law firms has been brought very low, rocking New York society and BigLaw to its core. Law firms may never be the same.

As a result, the legal industry is reversing its bigger-is-better trend. Dozens of start-up law firms, prospering mid-sized and regional firms, mega-networks of telecommuting lawyers, and new legal vendors leap into the breach. It’s possible the growing economic recovery will allow BigLaw to repair its embattled reputation and rule again, but one thing everybody understands is that for the first time in a long time BigLaw has many serious competitors.

Scenario #3 -- The Big Chill is a future where the hoped-for 2010 recovery has not appeared and does not seem imminent. All governments and economists now agree the recovery will not appear until 2011 or later. Federal stimulus plans have dramatically slowed home foreclosures, but failed to thaw banks’ lending practices. The only bright spot in the corporate legal services market comes from the huge corporate M&A deals being struck in pharma, transportation, real estate, and energy at enormous fire-sale prices.

Corporate legal clients have much smaller legal budgets, but still face an overwhelming burden of legal issues, including bankruptcy, financing, litigation, and regulatory changes. In response, all firms survive by cutting costs to the bone and learn to compete on price. The largest companies discover they have no energy to deal with scores of smaller firms. The exchange of large amounts of commodity work for law firms and the BigLaw promise of safety for corporations becomes the two-ingredient glue that keeps big companies with big law firms. It is a painful time, particularly for legal vendors. Competition becomes cut-throat, pitting firm against firm—and in a surprising twist, some firms against some clients.

Scenario #4 -- Davids vs. Goliaths sees corporate legal clients having a radically different response to the continuing economic deep freeze. In a world already full of risk, they see little extra risk in moving from one law firm to another. All relationships are up for grabs. Some clients cancel their convergence programs, turning to procurement agents or consultants to deliver the best combination of price and expertise on each matter.

The legal industry is rapidly disaggregating. The fiction that big firms could develop and benefit from economies of scale is now seen for the naked emperor it always was. In BigLaw, some of the biggest rainmakers decide they’d rather not share their pie, and form their own boutique firms. In fact, new firms of all kinds are sprouting up all over. Technology vendors reorganize to provide turnkey services and compete directly with firms. Many law firms outsource everything but their most core legal services. Clients are buying legal services directly from India and China. The only certainty is that this is a time for pragmatists, not purists. Everyone who hopes to survive this era is now brutally scrutinizing their beliefs, styles, processes, and goals.

BUI Policy Reintroduced

Boating is a more popular recreation during summer and fall. Consequently, it is during these seasons that boating accident also rises.

The U.S. Coast Guard revealed that motorboats have the most accident with 44%, personal water crafts with 24% and cabin motorboats with 15%. Over all 21% of deaths were attributed to alcohol use.

Consequently, authorities saw the need to address this matter. The California State Senate is reviewing a bill that would make boating at par with driving in case of intoxication.

Senator John J. Benoit, crusader against drunk driving, introduced Senate Bill 154 allowing authorities to suspend boater’s licenses if found boating under the influence (BUI). As Vice Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, Senator Benoit said that drivers of both cars and watercrafts have the same reckless mindset.

California Department of Boating and Waterways reported that about 55 deaths transpired on California waterways in 2007 and half of it involved intoxication.

This bill was just a re-introduction of The Department of Motor Vehicles’ BUI regulation which was stopped by the California Court of Appeals for lack of explicit statutory authority.

If passed, Senate Bill 154 would amend state law thereby permitting DMV to resume its license suspension policy.

Car accidents in Texas

Our firm has helped thousands of individuals throughout Texas with their car accidents. As many of you may not know, insurance companies have many tactics to minimize each claim that is submitted by consumers. Even when you are supposed to be in good hands, it’s the total opposite, you are in for a fight. The reason is simple, they have to keep their stock holders happy, not you.

For example, when any one is hit from behind, and there is no broken bones, or contusions, or lacerations, or any major trauma, insurance companies have a way to evaluate the injuries. They are called soft tissue injuries. Now, the adjusters will start to minimize the injuries, the impact that the accident may have on people’s life and so for starters, they will not pay for the full value of the impact, since its only a small impact. Meanwhile, you have lost time from work, your car is not fixed and you are in pain.

Of course this happens when the individuals are not represented. On the other hand, when people come to our firm, their vehicles are repaired, they get seen by doctors and they get compensated for time lost from work. In other words, we maximize their recovery. This is one of the many reasons that people have to come to our law firm right after a car accident.

Another example is when the accident is more serious and there are broken bones, brain damage and or fatal injuries. Now the insurance companies will pay a little more, but they will still use all of their techniques to still minimize your claim. That is why is so important that you have efficient legal representation on your side. To properly care for your injuries, to fix your vehicle and to get you back to normal again, that is our commitment to you.

We always recommend that if you are involved in a car accident, or any type of personal injury, you should have legal representation. Insurance companies have their legal team working for them constantly, and so should you! Let us be your legal team because “We care about your legal needs.”

It's Amazing

Happy Friday! It has been a long week with a few tricky days rolled in there, and I am excited that it is the weekend, so I thought I would start it off with an uplifting song from Jem. (Not sure if I entirely love the song... but this post is more for video technique). At first, I had mixed feelings about the way this video was filmed (a little jumpy) until the end when it said how they did it (I won't spoil it). Thoughts?

Wheelchair man died in a crash

Pedestrian accidents increase due to the risks involve just in crossing the streets. In fact, injuries or deaths are more attributed to pedestrian accidents than car collisions or mishaps.

If an able bodied person is in threat for danger when crossing the street, what more for a person bound in a wheelchair?

Cross walks and crossings have designated access ramp for people in a wheelchair. However, the threat of being in danger is greater for them compared to able bodied people.

The limited mobility of people in wheelchairs was manifested in an accident happened in Santa Rosa.

Richard Trenam, a 58 year old wheelchair-bound was hit when crossing Guerneville Road crosswalk. He remained on life support until his death last Monday, March 23.

Antonio Salano Villa was the driver of the car that hit Treman. There were no signs of intoxication or drug use. He claimed that he had the green light at the time.

The crash was under investigation. Police officers were urging any one who witnessed the crash to step up and shed light to what really happened.

Tie Your Shoes by guest: Melissa Esplin

The husband introduced me to Ian's Shoelace Site a while ago, and I'm sure the cool train left a while ago with crazy lacing, but this site makes me want to wear lace ups every day just so I can try a new method. Sadly, the only lace ups in my wardrobe are running shoes that don't go with much besides running shorts.

    _dsc2847sm

I thought I'd try out some new lace methods on Chris's high-tops (we know high-tops are all the rage) mostly because I wanted to see the cool lacing in action and the laces on his hyperdunks stand out against the black shoe. It took me about 15 minutes to unlace and re-lace each shoe, which wasn't so bad, and I thought my lacing job was pretty awesome until Chris told otherwise. He wanted his shoes tied his way specifically for a tight fit for ball; not nearly as exciting as the lacing pictured above, whatever.

I'm still distraught that I don't have any stylish lace-ups. Oh, how great would be my joy if I could own some crazy lace-ups. Daydreaming. . .

    15378474_00_d

For sportier days I would wear some awesome Nike Air shoes that showcase nearly every blog-worthy color of the rainbow. Maybe I would lace them up lattice style.

    16333601_21_d

For fashion-forward days, I would wear gladiator-style Jeffrey Campbell booties laced up double back style.

Parisian Shops

    Niou

I am jumping continents here, but a friend of mine is going to France next week, (lucky her!) and she reminded me that I have yet to post all of my Paris/Europe posts, so I will be putting more up shortly.

We barely touched the surface when it came to Parisian shopping, in fact we only popped into a few shops. Here are a few of my favorites that I would frequent again in a heartbeat all in really close proximity to each other in the Marais, on rue St. Paul.

Niou: (shown above) Very cool modern kid's toy shop.

Details of the Wynn Part 2

    Wynn

In our room at the Wynn (which we got an amazing rate on - email me for details) I was especially taken by the Picasso artwork which was refreshingly different from most hotels ... and the gigantic bathroom with a 'lil flat panel in it was nice too.

    Wynn

The pool area was down right, incredible. There were areas that were more private, and spots that were more open, it didn't feel like other pool areas where you feel too overexposed walking around, it is very well designed with a nice layout. I liked it a lot.

More pattern details seen throughout the hotel. Tomorrow I will share some shots from the neighboring Encore hotel and then I will be done with sharing Vegas shots, phew.

Personalized Post & Presents by guest: Melissa Esplin

I like to have stationery lying around the house, but it seems that when I need to send out a much-deserved 'Thank You', I'm fresh out. In which case, I'll write the message on thick cardstock, round the corners and with decorative paper sew an envelope and send the felicitations on their way. The more outrageous the paper, the better, right? Also, no need to be embarrassed by inconsistent or scribbly handwriting with a faux fancy handwriting tutorial, via design*sponge. I only wish I had thought of that when I was addressing my wedding invitations nearly 3 years ago.

    _dsc2693sm1

In addition to always coming up short with stationery, it seems that I never have a gift box just the right size, and gift bags usually end up in the recycling bin as we have zero storage space. So when I have to wrap an awkward shaped gift (example: baby outfits, little diddies or edibles) I sew it shut like my envelopes! No better way to wrap a unique shape than by making one in the process, right? And if you sew with the stitches close enough together, the recipient can just pull at the ends and rip the package right open from the perforation! Slick.
