Art Translated

Serendipitously I came across the artwork of Jeff Depner and being an enthusiast of stripes, polka-dots and cool spins on geometry it really made me happy. After perusing his site for a bit, I discovered that Pringle of Scotland used his work as inspiration for their Spring/Summer Collection of 2012. How awesome is that! Can you think of any other rad artwork that has directly translated onto the runway?

Art Filled Home....

The NEW Made By Girl site design is almost ready.... & guess what?!?!? We'll be launching the GOLD LOVE prints along with it! Can't wait!!

Along with all of that - I'll be adding more Cocoa & Hearts paintings & this time you'll be able to access C & H right through a link on Made By Girl!
This week I came across this home on Deco Dir and was immediately inspired. The artwork on the walls in this home really got me back in the mood to paint!

I LOVE art....and it's fascinating to see it on a large scale. Of course this is miniature in comparison to the artwork great artists like Picasso painted - those things THINGS were HUMONGOUS!!  I was lucky enough to stand in front of a few at the Getty & MOMA this year.

Do you like large scale art? Would you ever consider adding some large pieces to your home??

Nadia's Hallway Makeover...

Love, love, love getting pictures from customers who buy my artwork! Even though I'm not able to post all the photos I get from people showing off my designs, I try to post a few here & there!

One particular reader & fellow blogger, Nadia who I wrote about here sent over these cute pics. She did a hallway makeover....which also included my Love & Hello Languages prints!

Pretty amazing when you look at the before & after pics. She explains the entire process on her blog from choosing the paint color to that cute little vintage cabinet!

So, what do you think of the after pics??

The Commission Project

My friend Jordan's husband Paul is an extremely talented painter and they are doing another Commission Project where you send in a photo that you would like painted and Paul beautifully paints it up creating your very own custom piece. The above painting is painted from a photo of our sweet little Miss India, and I absolutely adore it!

Paul's style and catalog of work blows me away, his work is brilliant. See the details of the Commission Project here, and think it over because it sells out fast!

Quasi Cinema

Using sewed personal photographs on fabric and wood Lucas Simões out of São Paulo created an awesome quasi-cinema installation. The composition of his photos recreates a sense of motion and simple but powerful cinematic-like art. How cool is this? Read more about it here.

Mother of Beauty : Eva from Sycamore Street Press

Several months ago around Mother's Day I asked a few of my favorite creative online mothers to answer a few questions about motherhood. I am excited to share what Eva from Sycamore Street Press had to say! Her and her husband Kirk are super creative, talented and run the letterpress shop Sycamore Street Press in the beautiful mountainous valley in Heber City. They had a sweet baby girl, Ingrid back in November, recently launched their new letterpress collection, and are teaching letterpress classes with slots now open in September now too! I think Eva is such a cool and lovely person and I really enjoy what she had to share, hope you do as well...

    1. What is your favorite part of being a new mom? Is it different than you thought?

My life feels complete. When Ingrid came along, something just clicked. I love the small moments. Like when she finishes nursing and looks up at me and starts to coo. Or when I go to get her up from a nap and am greeted by the biggest crinkly nose grin ever. I could just melt. I suspected it would be like this, but I still couldn't have imagined how much joy one tiny human could give me!

    2. What is your daily schedule like now and how does blogging fit into that?

The first few months were like a marathon with unexpected twists and turns and an always receding finish line. But once she hit about 4 months, things calmed down and we were able to get on more of a schedule. It's been so nice! Ingrid wakes Kirk and I up every morning around 6:30 or so. I nurse her and we both play with her in bed for a little bit before we start the day. During her morning and afternoon naps, I try and get as much work done as possible. But often it feels like I am just getting started when she wakes up! While she's awake we play, read books, do housework, etc... And I take her and the dog on a walk down our country road, weather permitting. She goes to bed early -- about 5:30. When she does, I really get down to work. Lately, we've been really busy preparing for the launch of our 2011 collection, so I'll often be up until 11 or 12 editing images, writing descriptions, blogging, returning emails, etc... But of course, it can vary a lot from day to day! And I actually wrote an in depth "day in the life" post on my blog.

    3. How do you find or seek after balance with being a mom and running Sycamore Street Press?

It's tough. I can have a hard time focusing on the task at hand. When I'm caring for Ingrid, I'll sometimes try to answer a few emails (much to her consternation). But in the evening when I'm at the computer working, I'll end up opening iPhoto so I can look at all the pictures of her!

Overall, though, Ingrid has really helped me live a more balanced life. Before I had her, I was such a workaholic. These days I take more time to spend with family, friends, and in nature. Sure, I don't get as much work done for Sycamore Street Press as when I spent 12-18 hour days at the studio. But I'm starting to realize that in the grand scheme of life, it's a good thing!

Another big step for me in finding balance is to get help. Since SSP began, I've teamed up with my friends Amy Shaffer, Kristin Mills, and Stephanie Ford to create the designs for our letterpress goods. Then, a couple of years ago, Kirk joined me full time in printing and running the business. It's made all the difference. This summer, we're looking to bring on a couple of interns as well. As for the domestic side of things, once or twice a week one of Ingrid's grandmothers will come and watch her. And I've started having someone come in and clean our place for a couple of hours each week. I'm not gonna pretend that I do it all on my own. I feel so grateful for the help I have!

p.s. Have you seen this toast that Amy Poehler gave recently about how she's able to "do it all"?

    4. What qualities in your own mother and/or women around you do you admire most?

Love. First and foremost. The way they'll do whatever it takes to help their children and family. My mom has always been that way. Also -- even with 4 kids at home, she was still able to find some time for creative projects. Painting, knitting, gardening, cooking, decorating... I grew up seeing my mom do these things, and it definitely influenced who I am and what I do today.

    5. What is really inspiring you at the moment?

The resilience of the Japanese people. Instagram. Ingrid... and her mostly thrifted, gifted, or handed down wardrobe. Lykke Li. Our morning walks through the juniper tree forest. Spring, and all it's beautiful blossoms. Secrets from a Stylist. The fuss and flurry of launching a new collection. Pippi Longstocking. Miss Moss...

    Thanks so much Eva!

my make believe collection :: 11 :: Nina Katchadourian

    Contributor post by Lisa Solomon

    the artist with caterpillar mustache
i was lucky enough to see nina katchadourian speak once at catherine clark gallery in san francisco [which by the way is consistently one of my favorite galleries in the city]. i love me some conceptual art that has a sense of humor - and that is exactly what katchadourian provides.

nina katchadourian - from the shark journal - sorted book project
sorted books is a perfect example of this. the arranging of book titles - in various collections, and photographing them, so that their meanings are altered.

nina katchadourian - from "composition" - sorted book project
deceptively simple i like thinking of the book as an art material, not just as an object in and of itself. i find myself interested in the size and shape and arrangement of these besides just the humor that the titles invoke.
nina katchadourian - map dissection 1
i'm also a fan of maps. and the idea of mapping. a map is such a functional - and in this day and age almost antiquated - thing. there is something intriguing about trying to depict a 3 dimensional place on a 2 dimensional plane - and i like how a map simultaneously does and doesn't make sense.  here katchadourian took a AAA map of the united states removing all the land and leaving just the roadwork.

it's interesting to think about how the roads connect us - and that even with the land removed the overall shape of the united states is still discernible. [i'm also rather amazed at the intricacy and delicacy and beauty of this as a cut piece of paper]

nina katchadourian - map dissection ii
then she took the same map and put areas of road that formed clusters together and sandwiched them in slides - like specimens. what do our roads say about us? she was interested in how some of them started to look figurative when removed from the whole....

nina katchdourian - genealogy of the supermarket
always interested in systems and family trees she's also done funny things like a genealogy of supermarket products/characters. who/what is related to who/what and what kid would they have ? [oh mr. clean and mr. brawny - i had no idea you were responsible for the gerber baby cuteness].

nina katchedourian - lichen moss map

born in the states, but raised in finland, katchedourian always saw familiar shapes in the moss by the rocks in her family's summer home. rubbing letters onto places she recognized she created about 20 moss maps... funny, right?

nina katchedourian - mended spiderweb 8
but i have to say - the pieces that really really speak to me are from her mended spiderweb series.
here's what she says about the project:
The Mended Spiderweb series came about during a six-week period in June and July in 1998 which I spent on Pörtö. In the forest and around the house where I was living, I searched for broken spiderwebs which I repaired using red sewing thread. All of the patches were made by inserting segments one at a time directly into the web. Sometimes the thread was starched, which made it stiffer and easier to work with. The short threads were held in place by the stickiness of the spider web itself; longer threads were reinforced by dipping the tips into white glue. I fixed the holes in the web until it was fully repaired, or until it could no longer bear the weight of the thread. In the process, I often caused further damage when the tweezers got tangled in the web or when my hands brushed up against it by accident.
The morning after the first patch job, I discovered a pile of red threads lying on the ground below the web. At first I assumed the wind had blown them out; on closer inspection it became clear that the spider had repaired the web to perfect condition using its own methods, throwing the threads out in the process. My repairs were always rejected by the spider and discarded, usually during the course of the night, even in webs which looked abandoned. The larger, more complicated patches where the threads were held together with glue often retained their form after being thrown out, although in a somewhat "wilted" condition without the rest of the web to suspend and stretch them. Each "Rejected Patch" is shown next to the photograph showing the web with the patch as it looked on site.

nina katchedourian - mended spiderweb #14
i think in many cases kathedourian's art works on a conceptualal level really well - it holds my attention, makes me think, points out the absurd and interesting in the everyday - but it doesn't always hold my heart. it doesn't make me long to own it. interact with it YES. have it on my wall, NO. but these pieces. these i want.

just brilliant, right? the red thread is beautiful. the fact that the spider rejects the mending and yet it stays intact, fallen, is beautiful. watching the video of the spider rejecting the red thread is pretty amazing. and the photos they are lovely to look at. a moment before destruction.

i love the idea of this human intervention, with the best intentions, just not working out. a metaphoric example of us, as a human race - meaning to do good, but still failing.

nina katchadourian - mended spiderweb #19

this is the one that i would like to own. it's complicated web. i love the tiers of mending and how the move away from and toward the tree. the laundry line is beautiful with those 2 clothespins catching the light and the dark cabin in the woods in the background. yup. this is the one for me.

until next time.... follow my collection on pinterest
