"Love is Like A Grilled Hot Dog"

    Valentine's Day Outfit

Yes, the title is courtesy of Mike. I have no clue what that means, but he sent me an email today (with a link in it that I needed) and that was the title. I think it has something to do with this being my Valentine's Day outfit and today was suspiciously warm (think outdoor party) and it made him think of 4th of July cookouts. (Sidenote: Mike is outside starting the grill for grilled veggies tonight and it just exploded and I saw it so I panicked and ran outside. He looked dumfounded and our neighbors were all like "WTF? You okay?" but seriously... he's going to blow our house up! It really went "Kaboom!" and I saw a giant flame shoot up in the back kitchen window! He claims it was "NBD!") Okay. anyway, as stated this was my outfit for yesterday. It was a low-key day but everywhere we went people told me how festive I looked. Red hair, red dress, red bow... you name it! It's my favorite! I love wearing red anyway. I feel bold and sassy.

The dress and studded belt are from Forever 21. The tights are Target. The wedges are Dolce Vita x Target. (You're going to get to a point you scold me for wearing these too much! "Go back to the flats, Kaelah! Switch it up!" Ha!) The bag is also from Forever 21. The headband is something I whipped up last week or something. Minnie Mouse much?

Will You Be My Valentine?

It's an understatement to say Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday. The reds, pinks and hearts galore, I eat it up. I anticipate the day with such a fervor that I can't even explain. Don't be fooled and think it's merely because I'm in a relationship, because it's not. Even as a single gal in high school I relished the 14th of February. I know so many people detest the day and chalk it up to being nothing more than a Hallmark holiday, but for me it was a proclamation of impending love. I may not have had it every year but I could appreciate it and those were fortunate enough. Plus, who doesn't love oversized teddy bears and balloons?! And I may or may not have a soft spot for the raspberry and orange creme chocolates. Shh!

This was my second Valentine's with Mike*. He's never been much of a curator for gifts. He's often left feeling flustered and stressed on getting me the "perfect" gift. I always assure him it's never about that, but he tries still. He woke up in the middle of the night to sneak out of bed and the house to go across town and acquire me a Valentine's goodie bag full of treats at 2am. Roses, trashy tabloids, candies from a story I told him about me being in 8th grade, and a Glee card to boot! I was tickled.

But that wasn't the best part. The best part was getting to spend every second with him today. Every single one. This of course is nothing out of the ordinary. I'm so fortunate to be able to spend almost every waking moment with him. I joked at the dinner table tonight that the only time Mike and I aren't together is when one of us is in the bathroom! Ha! (Well, and when he's in his weekly class!) But other than that, we're a pair. A duo. A team. With one comes the other.

I'm lucky enough to call him my best friend, my lover, my one and only, my business partner, my inspiration, my photographer, my voice of reason, my support system, and my number one fan. He's everything to me and for that reason I can safely say that everyday feels like Valentine's Day. He spoils me rotten and finds everything I lose (which is everything... seriously). He never raises his voice and he's patient and kind. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

Without risking being too mushy gushy or sickening, I'll simply say that everything I ever went through with my previous relationships and heartbreak has been worth it. I went through hell and back with my 3 year relationship before Mike and I never thought I'd ever love someone like that again but Mike swooped in at the perfect time and everything fell into place.

Last year we celebrated by renting a room at a mountain lodge in Gatlinburg. Nestled in the Smoky Mountains we dined on yummy food, went to the best aquarium (Ripley's. Yes, I like it more than the Georgia one!), went to too many jank tourist attractions, and ended it with a rushed trip to the ER to check me in for a camel bite (yes, that really happened). Oh, and we drove through a snow storm to get home! It was a whirlwind trip filled with so many tears (painful) and laughter (I mean... I did get bit by a camel! In the mountains! In Tennessee!)... We had toyed with the idea of returning. Instead we opted for a day-date, like we have almost every day. Errands and important stuff... productivity, lunch, fro-yo and enjoying each other's company.

Today made me realize that I don't need (or want) fancy candlelit dinners, rose petals, serenades or love poems. To be honest, those things make me so uncomfortable. I'm wary of showing public affection that is anything more than juvenile hand holding, but our little day-dates are perfect. To outsiders it would have appeared to be a day just like any other day, but that's the beauty of it... I get to celebrate it 365 days a year! And I get to share my love for Mike with thousands of people daily through this little blog, so thank you! Thank you for taking part in our Valentine's festivities and letting me ramble on about how fantastic he is!

Today was speckled with returns, sewing machine pickups, fabric shopping, applebees lunche, fro-yo on a bench downtown, random run-ins with people, activating a new phone and the wooden sky sing-a-longs. In a nutshell: it was perfect.

Mike - Thank you for being absolutely, indescribably perfect for me. Contrary to what I may claim, our silly bickering and nitpicking is one of my favorite qualities of our relationship. I can't imagine ever feeling this happy with anyone else.

I hope you all had a brilliant Valentine's! Whether you're single or spoken for, it's a day of love and laughter and sharing joy. Hug everyone around you, and then hug yourself, too! We should all be our own Valentine's!

MY Guy & Valentine's Day...(Via Made By Girl)

There's something really SPECIAL about a man who shows his LOVE for a woman. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to marry a 'GOOD' man who showed the world he loved me. I went through MANY CRUSHES including one on SPIDERMAN - that never went anywhere!

Oh yes & RICKY Schroder, remember him?!?! (Silver Spoons). I even wrote Ricky a letter letting him know that I LOVED him & I was the girl for him. In fact, I even I told him I wanted to MARRY HIM! I mailed that letter one summer & never heard back....guess he didn't  feel the same way.

Well, all my CRUSHES weren't TV guys, they also extended into real life. The REAL LIFE crushes I had were just that, crushes. I'd fall in love (usually from a distance, cause I was super shy) & the guy wouldn't even know it. Ever gone through that?!? That's the worst.  That happened to me for about 4 years in HIGH SCHOOL. The day I finally got the COURAGE to tell him I "REALLY REALLY REALLY" liked him, he was already taken. Figures.

Needless to say, I learned MY LESSON that day:  always seize the moment.

These days I can rest assured that I no longer have to feel that feeling of having my heart broken or being told we aren't compatible....or even the CRAPPY realization that HE chose someone else over me.

This Valentine's Day I AM LOVED by a man who is not afraid to show it. He goes far & beyond to bring a smile to my face and I'm thankful to God. No matter what field you're in, what type of JOB you have or don't, LOVE is something we all dream about & long for.
The reason I think 'we' still work is because we don't forget to do those little things that most people (after a few years together) take for granted.  That is what helps our LOVE grow....

This June, we'll be together for 13 YEARS & I still look forward to his arrival from work every afternoon.

When I woke up this morning, he had all these cut outs with the word "LOVE" all over my desk, bed, and bathroom. He's done this in the past & I love it.

This is the 3 layer cake he made me the night before Valentine's Day. I showed him a recipe I saw on Sweetapolita & he told me he was going to make it for me. He sure did!

Ok, it's not the SAME amazing ribbon frosting Rosie used, but his effort was genuine & sweet! It's a butter cream frosting with dark chocolate cake.....& it was delicious! Wish I could share some WITH ALL of you!!

Some of you had asked me if my guy was a chef....he isn't. He did take some culinary courses in college though & his mom is a pastry chef in Hawaii. So, she did teach him a few things....lucky me.

above: I sneaked a quick pic of him (from my iphone)  making my cake....

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you & to my sweet guy xoxo.

Valentine's Gift Guide!

I'll admit that I'm not the best at these types of things... I've received several emails, FormSpring questions and Tumblr Asks about the art of gifting on Valentine's and I promised to try and post on it. To be quite honest, I go the same route every year (a bit different, of course, but still...). What I mean by that is I really like to do a "gift basket" of sorts. Doesn't have to be a legitimate basket, but I like to get a bunch of little things and put them together to create one larger gift.

I should also preface this by saying Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday of the year. Seriously. Of all of them. It's my favorite. Even when I was single, I loved it. The reds and pinks and hearts everywhere! Flowers galore and mushy goodness... I'm a fan! But sometimes the gift giving can be a bit tricky because maybe you've only been dating for a week, maybe you're not official, maybe he has everything or maybe your lady really hates the holiday? Well here are a few ideas that I've curated and maybe they'll work for you, too!

These are appropriate for him or her... significant others or just friends! Photogs, type nerds, and people on the go!

Who? The Photog Who Loves Coffee
What? A Nikon (or Canon!) Lens coffee mug + a supply of their favorite coffee!
Where? Photojojo (and your local supermarket)

    Who? The Beer Lover
What? All Natural Vegan Beer and Cedarwood Soap
    Where? Etsy

    Who? The Rustic Romantic
What? A Repurposed Barn Door Hand-Carved Love Plaque
    Where? Etsy

    Who? Someone On The Go!
What? A messenger bag or backpack from Fossil
    Where? Fossil

    Who? Anyone Special!
    What? Optometrist-style Valentine's Print
    Where? Etsy

    Who? Your Biking Pal
What? A Tandem Bicycle Print on a Repurposed Book Page
    Where? Etsy

Who? The Graphic Designer or Type Nerd
    What? Vintage Type Wood Blocks
    Where? Etsy

Who? Your Gal with Stretched Ears
    What? Pink and Floral Plugs
    Where? BMA Modified

If you're still not sold on items like this or if you want to avoid going the online route, try doing what I always do! Grab a bag or basket or box nearby, fix it up with some fancy stuffing, add in your love's favorite candies, sweet treats, handmade coupons (think: Good For One Back Rub, or You-Pick Movie Night), their favorite DVD! You can even bake them cupcakes or cookies!

I find that little things like that go a long way! I think Valentine's Day should be used as a day to show your partner that you love them and you know them. Try to think of things that are a little less "expected"! Maybe their favorite movie from when they were younger? Their favorite candy? Make sure it comes across that you listen to them and you "get it."

Etsy is also a great resource for one of a kind prints for your special one! Not only will you get a custom piece of art, you'll also get to decorate your living space, too!

What is the best Valentine's gift you've received? What about given?

Confession: I'm Having an Affair

It's true. I am. I'm cheating with 3 brilliant works of art... 3 charming, endearing, wonderful creatures. Oh, I didn't mean I was cheating on Mike.... I meant I'm cheating on my ruffled black flats! Okay, okay, okay... so just two weeks ago I had to defend myself (twice) on why I chose to wear black flats every single day. I chose to wear them because they're comfortable! They're easy to walk in. My feet never tire. They match everything. Yeah, sure, I was tired of seeing them, too, but here's the thing... my feet are terrified of heels. Seriously. Terrified. I walk like a drunk penguin and everyone stares. I vowed to be a "flats girl forevz". Well the very next day Mike and I found ourselves in Target, perusing the aisles as usual, and I had a sudden inclination to go to the shoe section. This isn't unusual, of course. I look at the shoes every time we go. But this time felt different. I felt bold. I felt like trying something new.

What did I do? I picked up a pair of wedges that I most certainly never would've picked up in my life, and I put them on. What happened? I fell in love.

There's no denying the fact that under any other circumstances I would have scoffed at these shoes and said "Ha! Really? Never!" because they're quite obviously not my usual style. Even if I did go for heels, I went for ruffles and suede and pretty things. These looked too hard... too odd. They had a "clog" feel to them and if anyone hates clogs, it's this girl! At least, I used to... I think I still do? Oh bother... I have no idea what is happening to me! I'm being awfully over dramatic but this was a big deal for me. I don't like heels. And I certainly don't find them comfortable. Then I walked in them. I exclaimed to Mike "I bet I could jump rope in these!" and at that moment, I was sold. In the buggy (yes, buggy!) they went!

Well, I was inspired. Up and down the other aisles I ran. Then I found these. A strange orange brown, sure, but the heel and platform spoke to me. Sister shoe, I said, You're coming home with me! Into the buggy they flew!

Then I stumbled upon these. The chunky brown straps were something I was comfortable with, and I knew the wedge would make it easier to withstand. Mike was not sold, however, but I quickly talked him into giving them them benefit of a doubt and he obliged. They're the only ones I have yet to style up but I'm patiently awaiting the day!

My point with this post was to document a transformation in myself. Not only in my style, but also in my ability to open up to new things and just try them... even if they have failed me miserably in the past. I can't tell you how many pairs of heels I've bought and throw out or lost simply because they ended up being too uncomfortable. I'm willing to try things, sure. but I stand by my word that if they're far too uncomfortable I just will not wear them. I refuse to believe "fashion over function" or "fashion over comfort" and while you may disagree, that's totally okay! You can have all the uncomfortable shoes for yourself! I'm just excited that I found three cozy pairs in just one trip!

Another point I'd like to make with this post is that you should have an affair. Not by cheating on your significant other, but by branching out and trying something new! Maybe you'll fall in love with it! Hate brussel sprouts? Try them one more time... with an open mind. If you still hate them, don't eat them. But maybe you'll surprise yourself. We learn something new about ourselves all the time... Here I am at almost 23 years old and I just now realized that I like shoes. It's a whirlwind revelation for me, so you should try to learn something about yourself! Who knows? It might even change your life forever! (I may be pushing it with that one, but seriously! What do you have to lose?!)

If you should be loving anyone on Valentine's Day (and every day!), it should be yourself. So go out there, try something new or something you thought you hated. Have an open mind. Be willing to accept change! Sometimes it's fun!
