October 1st means...

decorating for Halloween!!


Okay, perhaps I should revise that by saying "October 1st means you're no longer weird for having your decorations up already". I started decorating last Monday, which isn't really that bad. I'm actually rather proud of myself for waiting that long.

I'm already about 3/4 of the way done decorating but these pumpkins made from construction paper are holding strong in 1st place as my favorite decoration this year. I made them after seeing the tutorial on Martha Stewart's website and couldn't resist making some for my house no matter how juvenile it seemed.

The way the light shines through them in the evenings is so charming!



Halloween is definitely my favorite holiday to decorate for. Have you started yet?

It's the little things...

like a little hat for your cat!



I picked up this gem of a prop when Ivan and Elycia were out a few weekends ago at the junk store. Upon finding it I immediately knew one of my kitties would have to wear it. Finally I remembered to take it out of the car a few days ago and here we are now!

Doctor Octopus is the best sport. He's almost always willing to put on a silly outfit for me and pose, which I obviously take advantage of. This little brat purred the whole time the hat and sweater were on. He's so precious!

A peek...

into my newly painted craft room. I would normally wait and take photos of it with my real camera when it's all finished but I couldn't resist sharing. I am so in love.





I'm still working on getting everything moved back in there, hence the empty shelves, but I just can't get over those stripes. I only did it on one wall so it would be like the accent wall, and be that much more special but now I'm left with one big white wall that I'm not 100% sure how to decorate since I moved my wall of polaroids to a new area.

I'm so glad I painted it white, it's amazing how bright it is in there now. I can't wait to get back to work.

One step at a time!

After taking a bunch of photos of my craft room to blog about I realized my craft room really isn't as inspiring of a space as I'd like it to be. I decorated it with all my favorite things but it didn't come across to me as a crafty space.

This week I took down all my faux animal mounts and hung an inspiration board instead. I'm absolutely crazy about it. I hung it on the wall beside my desk so I can see it from where I sit.

Aren't those tacks the neatest?! I had a bunch of stuff hung up with boring ones then I dumped out a box and found those. Of course I had to take everything down and rehang them with those tacks! My dad had given them to me some time last year so that makes them extra special.

I'm really excited to be making my craft room a more inspiring crafty space. I think the issue before was it was too much like just another room in the house. I just wanted to sit in there and lounge, ya know what I mean? I'm working on displaying supplies, like the buttons in jars a few posts down, so that it can feel more like a place to work.

I'll be sure to share lots of photos when I finish redecorating.

A peek into my living room!

Like I mentioned a few times recently, we've been working on re-doing the living room! Since the beginning of the year we've:

• painted the walls a nice, light green to cover up the ugly gold I thought was a good idea when we moved in.
• painted the ceiling white, also to cover up the ugly gold I though was a good idea.
• thrifted some new wall hangings.
• most, importantly - GOT CARPET! Which is the best thing we've ever saved money for! Anyone who says they don't like carpet and would rather have hardwood floors has obviously never rolled around on my carpet. It's magical. I love it oh so much.



You can find some older pictures of the living room here, it might not look like that big of a difference in photos but it's 100% different (and better!) in person. I'm so excited. Here are some photos of it now;










Excuse the lack of window coverings. I had curtains hanging and I was sick of washing them all the time (cat hair!! they're the one thing I couldn't figure out how to easily vaccuum) so I decided to do a blinds and valence combo. The blinds had to be ordered since apparently they're an odd size and will be here any day now and I haven't decided on a valence color yet.

The living room is now my favorite room in the house, I want to spend all my time in it.

A peek into my kitchen...

The kitchen is one of the only rooms in the house I haven't shared pictures of. When we originally painted it I made the totally awesome decision to paint the ceiling green as well as the walls. BIG MISTAKE! It was so dark in there! But when my mom came over to help me paint the living room a few weeks ago she did the kitchen ceiling too! Finally, the kitchen is nice and bright! It makes a world of difference.

So, without further ado here's a peek into my kitchen...







It ain't your grandma's kitchen. Oh wait...it's actually pretty similar, right?


And that my friends... is where the magic is made. ;)


(FYI: The kitchen is actually all one shade of green, clearly some of the spots in the kitchen have much worse lighting than others.)

One year later...

It's been one year since we moved into our first home! We've done a lot of renovating, and building. The most recent home project is something that should have been done ages ago; hanging things in the living room! I've been scared to do it, no idea why! About a week ago we finally sucked it up and just started hanging things... I'm so in love with the result. Seeing all the wonderfully tacky things I've been collecting from antique malls and thrift stores finally hanging is awesome.


That would be my current thrifty pride and joy. I've been looking for a deer for quite some time but they were either creepy looking, really expensive or falling apart. We were leaving Salvation Army when I just happened to look over and see in the window that deer. We bolted back in and bought it. He's hard plastic (in case you can't tell) and absolutely perfect! Not to mention, look how snazzy he is in that wig!




 See my paper chain? Tehehe. I wish I could leave it up all year round! 


I still haven't shown you my new entertainment center that was found on craigslist (it's on the opposite wall of the photo above). I'll post some pictures of it when I show you all my Christmas decorations since it's just filled with santas, deer and nutcrackers!

Watch out Santa!

 I'm not going lie, I started decorating for Christmas. I just couldn't help it! It started by just getting my nutcrackers out of the Christmas boxes and then I was like "well, all the boxes are already out in the living room...so why not?!"

Plus, I have another excuse! My oldest brother gets to come home from overseas (he's in the army) for two weeks later this month so our whole family is getting together and having an early Christmas with him. (I'm so so so excited. I miss him!)


There is still lots of decorations to still put out, but it's getting there. We definitely won't get out tree until it gets closer til Christmas.

I'll make sure to share more pictures of my decorations when it's a more appropriate time (aka December) When do you plan on decorating?

Halloween around the house. Part 2

I'm really excited about the pumpkin below! He's so awesome, I love that creepy smile. My dad bought him for me from the auction (as well as the kitty at the end of the post and a bunch of other really old halloween goodies!)



I'm kind of bummed that all the decorations will be coming down on Monday, I feel like they just went up! The month of October really is flying by. Plus once they come down the days before I can start decorating for Christmas will drag by! (I'm more excited about that than any one human should be!)

I also made some halloween sugar cookies!! Clearly I'm still not the best decorator but I'll get there! :P

I'm having the worst time finding halloween decorations. I'm hoping to score a bunch on sale after halloween is over. But I haven't had much luck, obviously I've picked up a few things here and there but I'm surprised at the lack of halloween stuff on the store shelves. Everywhere I go it's christmas stuff already. (not that I'm not excited about that too, but I'm pretty stocked up from thrifting!)
