I am a huge Leslie Feist fan and her long awaited album dropped today (yesterday in Europe). This morning I read an interesting interview of her over at Pitchfork that made me like her even more. I enjoy not only the way she sings, but also the way she thinks, she seem so authentic and legit. I will be listening to her new album Metals as I unpack more boxes today. Have a great Tuesday everyone!
The Young Rivals, a Hamilton, Ontario-based outfit that puts out some gritty rock'n'roll tunes have a Canadian tour documentary in the works and we happened upon a sneak peek today. Though not titled yet, the film by Last Frame Pictures is due out next Spring and follows the band through the tour process featuring small shows in unique locations and interviews with tourmates such as Hollerado, Born Ruffians and Yukon Blond. Here's the trailer; doesn't it make you want to go see a band? Check out their tour dates here and a free download from them below.
Did you catch Neon Indian on Jimmy Fallon the other night? I love that song Polish Girl off their new album Era Extraña which came out this past week. Download "Fallout" (above) from the new album and watch the performance of "Polish Girl" on Jimmy Fallon here courtesy of Audio Perv, and while you're at it, stream Neon Indian's new album here at Exclaim.ca.
Enjoy this free download of "Then, It's White" from Swedish electronic outfit The Field from his anticipated new album "Looping State Of Mind" - More info at kompakt.fm! (Via Exclaim.ca).
Exclaim says it's a safe bet thatDestroyer's Kaputt will make many a year-end best-of list and some will be pleased that they have offered up a new video for the album track, "Savage Night at the Opera." Directed by David Galloway the video features a motorbike clipping through the streets of Vancouver starting near Gastown and ending up in Stanley Park (running a few red lights along the way I might add). There's something sort of intoxicating about the video, I'm thinking it's the low tippy fast ride through the city, and a cool view of the place we call home. I'm now going to try it in full screen.
I like this song, You Should Do Better from the album, Hollow by Kiwi indie pop, post punk group (think The Smiths, Gang of Four), Cut Off Your Hands. They have it free for download on their facebook page here.
Sunday was a fun day! Mike and I got up, got dressed, and spent the entire day thrifting! So many beautiful dresses, handbags, etc. Most of it will be going into Honeybean but I couldn't help but find a few things for myself! We rushed home to meet Brian and Christina so we could grab some dinner and head to a show downtown. We opted for yummy Mexican food at Las Palmas (my favorite!) and then we went to 3rd and Lindsley. Jason Reeves was having his album release show and Rosi Golan was opening for him. I love Rosi's voice, music, everything. She played a ton of songs from her new album (which officially comes out on the 30th!). It was so good! She's absolutely adorable so that doesn't hurt! While yesterday was slightly overshadowed with my ridiculously long post about blogging woes, I opted to move the typical Music Monday to today! I don't want anything to distract from this glorious playlist. I'm a little biased because I love it and I put it together but I think you'll like it! I'm a sucker for singer/songwriter tunes, and even more so if it's fronted by a lady with a stellar voice. I can't carry a tune in a bucket so I'll leave that to the professionals.
Here's some Rosi Golan for you! (I think the first song is so perfect for the here and now!)
I don't wanna wait, I don't wanna wait, I don't wanna wait
Thinking everything is alright.
Moment that I wait, or I hesitates a moment that I waste
And I can see it all passing me by, I can see it all passing me
The streets, the bars, the restaurants. The foreign toung, the ambiance they gave.
A day, a week a month it seems I'm always runnin out of steam
And here are a few Jason Reeves songs in case you aren't familiar (his new album just came out last week!)
Next week I'll be sharing another Nashville resident that I think you'll all like!
Have you seen anyone live lately that you absolutely adored? Who are your favorite singer/songwriters?
PS; Thank you all so much for your wonderful response to yesterday's post. I was in tears reading everything. It's sad that it took me breaking down, crying to Mike and expressing how much I hated my blog/what it had become and that I actually allowed that to happen for me to wake up. I needed to "out" myself to serve as a wake up call. Couldn't do it without all of you <3
I hope you had a fantastic weekend, I took a spontaneous break on Friday and barely got on my computer all weekend, a nice little break that sometimes you've got to do.
Here is something for Music Monday, imagination and creativity mixed with music. Cee-Roo aka Cyril Käppeli from Switzerland is a multimedia genius creating the most ridiculously rad mash ups. He mashes together rock, soul, and hip-hop etc. everything from the Beatles and Bob Marley, to live mixes of James Brown, Jackson 5 and more, pretty mad genius. He are are a few of my favorite clips. You can also download five of his mix tapes for free here.
Fever is a new 7 inch by Capitol 6, a psychedelic folk-rock quintet based here in Vancouver. If you like log cabin building and mountains mixed in with a nice little guitar riff, you'll like this video. Just a little warning to anyone offended by raw animal carcass - might offend some. Otherwise beautiful scenery and tune to go with it. Find them on local label, Light Organ Records. (Via Zulu report at Scout Magazine).
Over the weekend I watched Ingredients, an interesting film about the local food movement. The film gave me a different perspective while at the Farmer's Market when splurging on a variety of yummy heirloom vegetables. It made me respectfully happy to give money directly to those hard-working famers. In the film, I was also struck this particular song, it gave me goosebumps, it is called, "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra. It is a great one, hauntingly beautiful great.
Vancouver garage rock duo The Pack a.d. are working on a new album right now called Unpersons (their 4th studio record on Mint Records); out September 13th. Detroit producer Jim Diamond (who's worked with The White Stripes) flew in on his own insistence to produce it first-hand. Nice fuzzy college fair! Here's a listen. (Via CBC - New Music Tuesday).
Since we are briefly on the subject of workout gear from the last post, what about some workout music? Here are five songs I recently added into my mix of workout jams. What are you listening to? Upbeat power songs sure do wonders in motivating me and getting my heart moving and of course cool down jams are a must too -- (like Islands above). Shout 'em out, what are your favorite power or cool down songs to work out to?
New summery track by Swedish pop outfit Air France. The group just dropped their first new song in a while called"It Feels Good to Be Around You". The track can be downloaded here via Sincerely Yours. (Via exclaim.ca)
The young British band Bombay Bicycle Club has been on my radar for a while, I love their sound and am happy to see their new single out called 'Shuffle'. It will be on their upcoming album "A Different Kind of Fix" which drops August 29th (at least in the UK). A great upbeat song for the winding down of summer! If you are in UK you can download the track on itunes now.
